NEW FINES FOR RIVER AND LAKE POLLUTION New and stiffer fines were decided upon in a meeting in Mugla with Governor Lutfi Yigenoglu. These new fines will be issued to boats conducting tourist trips on the Dalyan Canal and on Koycegiz Lake in order to keep the canal and the lake clean and free of pollution and debris. “Koycegiz Lake and the Dalyan Canal have an important place in the tourism along the south coast and these regulations will not impact the tourism in a negative way”, stated Governor Yigenoglu. Mayor Yigenoglu explained that the new fines are to penalize boat operators that do not obey the regulations. The increased fines for operating a speed boat on the canal or the river will be a fine of 1000YTL along with confiscation of the operators boating license. The fine for polluting either will be a fine of 1500YTL for the first offense with that fine increasing to 3000YTL for further offenses. All boat operators must pass a test for a license, obtain a license plate, and are obligated to have certain safety equipment always aboard their boats. Penalties will also be assessed for any boat operator who fails to comply to these regulations. The Administration Committee consists of the head officials of Koycegiz and Ortaca, the the city manager of OGK, the Mayors of Koycegiz and Dalyan, the Manager of the Izmir District Undersecretary of Seamanship, and the Chief of the Dalyan Boat Coop, all under the Chairmanship of Lufti Yigenoglu, the Governor of Mugla. The Koycegiz – Dalyan Environmental Conservation and Underground Construction Project sponsored by KFW, a German Finance Establishment, is being undertaken with the goal of the preservation of the ecological balance of the Koycegiz-Dalyan area. The Mud Baths and Thermal Spas by Koycegiz Lake, the ancient buriel tombs, and the ruins at Kaunos along the Dalyan Canal are among the important tourism attractions. Also the natural beauty that surrounds the area, as well as the environmentally protected Iztuzu Beach compliment the environmental beauty of the area. The Caretta Caretta Sea Turtles which come to Iztuzu Beach each year are part of the ecological plan for the area.
23rd OF APRIL NATIONAL HEGEMONY AND CHILDRENS FESTIVAL IN BREMER, GERMANY
Ulrike Schrieber has facilitated the approval of the celebration of the April 23rd National Hegemony and Childrens Festival in Bremer, Germany. It was approved by the Province Council of Bremer and will be celebrated at nine schools in Bremer by Turkish children living in Germany and the others at the schools in addition to the Province Council.
Schrieber has played an active role as a Deputy Parlimentarian for eight years, a second Chairmanship of the Bremer Red Cross, and as a member of the Kemalist Idea Association has been instrumental in getting active deputies to consolidate the Turkish-German friendship adding a new era to the relationship. This was made possible by the assistance of an old friend of Schriebers, Christian Weber, the Chairman of the Bremer Senate.
Ulrike Schrieber has spent the last sixteen summers in Dalyan, which is famed for its Iztuzu Beach where the Caretta Caretta Sea Turtle come to breed each year.
The Dalyan Belediye deserves praise for its recent initiative requiring the registration of local dogs by their owners. Aysel Kharaman, the Zabita Chief, deserves special thanks for her untiring efforts to achieve this goal which involved many meetings during the past several months between animal welfare volunteers, the Belediye, and other government officials. The 2004 Animal Protection Law calls for the registration of all dogs whether they have owners or whether they are strays. Another requirement calls for all dogs to be neutered and inoculated against rabies. Experience has shown that these last two requirements are the key to the future control and well-being of pets, and therefore vital to their interaction in urban societies. More than one hundred dogs were registered by their owners in the Gulpinar District of Dalyan on April 9th and 10th. Dates for future registration are as follows:
It is sufficient to produce the dog’s certificate (passport) signed by a veterinarian. Salih Gultekin, Dalyan’s veterinarian, will be in attendance at all registrations to offer advice and help.

THE CARETTA CARETTA OF TURKEY ARRIVED IN TUNUS The Caretta Caretta, which started his way from Iztuzu Beach near Dalyan, arrived in Tunus. The 30-40 year-old sea turtle is the only animal in Turkey which is tracked from satellite. From Iztuzu Beach it started its journey to Tunus with a satellite tracking device on its back and traveled about 2500 km. Its name is “Turkiye-1” . From this turtle much information about their behaviour, migration, and habits will be learned. The Caretta Caretta, which travel the oceans and leave their eggs on beaches of the Mediterranean, especially in the Mugla/Dalyan area, live mostly in the water. One Project was prepared by an ecological research association and by a special enviromental protective committee presidency. The president of EKAD Professor Dr.Ali Fuat, who studies the signals from the “turkiye-1”, specified that this Project is very important for the continuation of generations of these turtles. For 20 years we have watched their movement on the earth and have made protected areas for them. With this project the life of the Caretta Caretta in the water will no longer be a secret. In 2008 the battery on its back will expire. The movements of “Türkiye-1” can be watched from internet at www.seaturtle.org . This special sea turtle comes to the beach once in a year for ovulation and they leave 90-120 eggs on the beach. They choose generally deep areas, eat bluecrabs, and live near lagoons. They think “turkiye-1” will be a guest in Turkey again between 2010 and 2011
UNCLEANLINESS OF SEVGI YOLU During the winter season the streets become empty and dirty and one of the best examples of this is Sevgi Yolu. The bins in Sevgi Yolu are broken by un-thinking people and then everyone ends up leaving their rubbish all over the streets. We all must be more careful about our trash, for example; we can put our own rubbish into a plastic bag and then throw into the bin. We, as a community should protect the natural beauty of Dalyan and be sure everybody is taking responsibility for it.
THE MUD BATHS NEAR DALYAN The mud baths outside of Dalyan is one of the most favourite activities for tourists. Reuthers news agency praised these famous mudbaths to the world.
